Opinion: WWE Newbies - Evaluating April 2016's recruits to the Performance Center

So WWE announced ten shiny new recruits that will be training at the WWE Performance Center today. All of whom will have hopes and dreams of causing a storm on WWE NXT and eventually rocking our worlds on Monday Night RAW and Thursday Night Smackdown, grabbing that brass ring and becoming bonafide WWE superstars over the next few years. But how does the class of April 2016 look? Is there anyone that could potentially become the next breakout star? Or will they all be on the vast WWE scrapheap by this time next year? Let's take a cheeky look at this lads and lasses.

babatunde aiyegbusi

This big lad has been on WWE's radar since last Summer, so it was no surprise to see him finally get signed. Originally from Poland, Babatunde Aiyegbusim moved to the US to play for Brock Lesnar's former NFL side the Minnesota Vikings during their off-season period and despite only a short run for the team, connections made with comedian Jimmy Kimmel landed him a WWE tryout last summer in Orlando. He's a big lad at 6ft 7in and a billed 350lbs (closer to 330) and has reportedly impressed WWE big-wigs with his laid-back charisma and character. He has a lot going for him and if he puts the work in at the Performance Center, there's certainly the potential for WWE to have a new big guy to push. The main problem I see here is that certain higher ups within WWE will be overly impressed with his look and build and push him too hard and too fast, before he's adequately equipped himself with all the skills that their are to learn from the great trainers at the Performance Center.

bianca blair

Another athlete that WWE have been keeping tabs on for a while now, Bianca Blair has completed in a variety of different sports, including hurdling during high school and college, before moving into CrossFit and weightlifting. She's said to have an impressive strength that will surely give her an advantage at the Performance Center, whilst her distinctive look should also stand her in good stead. In interviews she's revealed that she suffered from the eating disorder bulimia while at college in 2008, so there's a positive story to be told about her recovery that could make her a potential stand out on WWE's performance center reality series Breaking Ground. Again with no previous pro wrestling training a lot of this is all down to how well she reacts to the training at the Performance Center, but having shown an ability to shift between different disciplines in the past she very well may flourish over the next few years.

nikola bogojevic

Another big new recruit, Nikola Bogojevic is Greco-Roman wrestling star from Wisconsin. Having won a Bronze medal in the 2014 Pan-American Games and spent time training at the US Olympic Training Center, it will be very interesting to see how this near 300lber develops his in-ring style at the Performance Center. Another clearly talented athlete, but I can't find much about his personality or performance skills, maybe this will be something that he'll have to develop to get noticed over the next twelve months.

carolyn dunning

The female recruits for this class are a real mix bag, with Carolyn Dunning coming from a bodybuilding and modelling background. I think it's difficult to suggest how Carolyn may cope in WWE, as the landscape of women's wrestling in the company has changed drastically over the last two or three years. Obviously thanks to her bikini bodybuilding and then modelling career, she's gonna look pretty damn good out there, but unfortunately for her there's a bit more to the females division in WWE right now.

macey estrella

Considering Macey Estrella was the first name on the list with any formal training, there's surprising little information about her around. She's trained by a bloke called Tom Caiazzo at somewhere called American Premier Wrestling...both of which can also find hardly any information about, so I've no idea on the quality of the training or how much training she's actually had. However, her past in the US Marine and Marine Corps SWAT team will mean that WWE will be keen to push her, as they love all things US army.

nicola glencross

Formerly known as Nikki Storm on the independent circuit, Glencross has competed in ten different countries, including the UK, USA and Japan, over he 7 year career, so far. Most frequently seen in SWA, ICW and EVE, Glencross has a strong technical style that should allow her to mesh with the likes of Asuka, Bayley and Emma. I'd expect Glencross to be moved onto WWE NXT television perhaps as soon as the next set of TV tapings to help bolster the women's division that has looked a little thing on the ground since losing Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks not too long ago. Having previously been trained by NXT coach Robbie Brookside (as well as current ICW World Heavyweight Champion Big Damo) Glencross could very well end up being the shining star of the April 2016 class.

terrance jean-jacques

Rounding off a pretty legit class of blokes, we have an All-American Wrestler, with a 32-2 record at the University of Iowa, Terrance Jean-Jacques. He's even competed in and won an MMA bout back in 2013. There seems to have been a push on big guys with this class and there's the potential that Jean-Jacques could get lost in the mix, in what is surely going to be a competitive group. However, he's got a strong look and we've seen amateur wrestler shine in WWE over the last six months with American Alpha being the best example. One problem for Jean-Jacques could potentially be a previously broken vertabrae in his back, but I'm sure we'll find out if that's going to be much off an issue as soon as he starts getting put through his paces by the NXT coaches.

danielle kamela

The final woman of the class, Danielle Kamela is a product of the KnokX Pro Academy, where she trained under WWE Hall of Famer Rikishi and former EWP Heavyweight Champion Gangrel. The pair have previously trained the likes of former WWE United States Champion Rusev, former WWE wrestler Troy McClain and former AAA star Steve Pain, so Kamela should have a strong foundation on which to build upon with WWE. Her lack of in-ring experience may also actually play in her favour, as she may well be easier to mold than those with more than herself. I'd also expect her time working for FOX Sports in Arizona to help her with the televisual performance element of her new job and wouldn't be surprised if WWE decided to utilise her as an on-air personality on NXT as she continues her wrestling training.

michael nicholls

Formerly known as Mikey Nicholls, Michael Nicholls is probably the most accomplished wrestler in this class, alongside the final member, who was his regular tag team partner as part of TMDK. Nicholls is a former 2 time GHC Tag Team Champion and has previously wrestled in Japan, his home country of Australia and the USA, most regularly for NOAH, EPW and NWA Pro. With a 15 year career already behind him, Nicholls is another one who should be more than ready to step straight onto programming, whether that be on his own or with the next man we're about to talk about...

shane veryzer

The other half of TMDK, the man formerly known as Shane Haste is just as an accomplished performer as his partner. Holding many of the same accolades and achievments as Nicholls, thanks to their eight years tagging together, it would seem like a no-brainer that we've see Nicholls and Veryzer continue to tag together when they make their debuts on NXT. The Australian duo have the potential to make a splash in NXT's tag team division which has lost Enzo & Cass and The Vaudevillains over the last few weeks, with a potential clash with American Alpha being a mouth-watering prospect for anyone who's followed the two teams.

Well that's the April 2016 recruits to the WWE Performance Center. I hope that you enjoyed this look at their prospects and found out a thing or two about the ten people who very well maybe the future of WWE. We'd like to wish everyone of the group the very best with their careers and look forward to seeing their progress over the coming months and years.

Wrestle Ropes' Ready For The Weekend: March 2016 Week 3

This week's see another packed weekend of grappling action across the country. In this week's look at some of the shows coming up, we head back to The Planet Nightclub in Wolvehampton, the move on to Morecambe for guaranteed mayhem before ending the weekend with a history-making event in London. Let's get Ready For The Weekend!

friday
fight club: pro rise against
wolverhampton, west midlands, england

Up first this weekend and Fight Club: PRO are back at The Planet Nightclub in Wolverhampton with Rise Against. The event shall see Clint Margera in a Death Match against AIW star, Rickey Shane Page. Originally, Margera was penciled to face Pete Dunne. However, Dunne refused to compete in a Death Match so found a replacement in Page who we are sure will have no issues with it. Speaking of Dunne, while he might have escaped a match with Margera, he's now found himself in a bout with Dave Mastiff. A former Fight Club: PRO Champion, Mastiff is one of the most dominating forces in British Wrestling. Dunne could find it's a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire this Friday night. In recent months, The Hunter Brothers and the duo of Dan Moloney & Wild Boar have developed quite the rivalry in FCP. However, Moloney & Boar have now informed FCP management that they will not be facing Hunters Brothers again until they have shown that they deserve a match with them. Hunter Brothers are happy to prove their worth and shall now face KYS member's Damian Dunne and the reigning Fight Club: PRO Champion, MK McKinnan in a tag team match on March 18th. If Hunter Brothers need to prove they are worthy of another match with Moloney &Boar then a win over a champion and two members of KYS should be a very good start.

alpha omega wrestling morcambe mayhem
morcambe, lancashire, england

Moving on to Saturday and The Winter Gardens in Morecambe see Alpha Omega Wrestling back in action with Morecambe Mayhem. March 19th shall see the AOW Women's Championship on the line except that the champion shall not be present. Viper is currently on tour in Japan which left Nikki Storm (literally) holding the championship while she's gone. Well Alpha Male, Stallion has now announced that 'The Best In The Galaxy' will be defending the championship against Lana Austin for Viper as well. Nobody in The Referendum is happy, including the champion. Lana could become the champion without the real champion even being in the same continent this Saturday. If The Referendum didn't have enough to worry them, the AOW Tag Team Championship shall also be defended in Morecambe by Bobby Roberts and Lewis Girvan. Their opponents? Well only Stallion knows who they are and has no plans on letting on before March 19th. Roberts & Girvan are walking into the unknown and may end up walking as former champions. Originally, Johnny Phere and Mikey Whiplash were scheduled to compete while Big Damo would face Stixx in two separate matches. However an injury to Stixx left Damo without a match for this Saturday. So AOW management took an unfortunate event and turned it into something great. They've announced that Phere, Whiplash and Damo will now compete in a triple threat match where the winner will be named the number one contender to the AOW Championship which is currently held by Stixx. The stakes have just been raised for this Saturday.

pro wrestling: eve let's make history
london, england

And finally on Sunday, Pro Wrestling:EVE returns and shall make history when they host the first ever all-female wrestling event in London. PW:E have stacked this show with competitors from over half a dozen nations taking part. Two nations represented will be Portugal and Germany as Shanna faces Blue Nikita. Shanna is a world-travelled competitor while Blue is one of the foundations of female wrestling in Europe today. Let's make some history with some international flavour added to it. The show will also mark Courtney's debut within the company. Her first appearance won't be an easy one as she faces a woman dubbed 'the baddest woman on the planet', April Davids. 'The Lancashire Terrier' is known for her dominating offence and should be a good match for Courtney who herself is known for blending wrestling with kickboxing. Two wrestlers known for blending their arts into one should be a great match up.  A few weeks ago, Nikki Storm became the only three-time Pro Wrestling: EVE Champion after defeating Rhia O'Reilly. However the win can by way of a referee stoppage. Rhia was understandably very angry at the way she lost and demanded a rematch. PW:E have granted the rematch with the stipulation that the match will be a No Disqualification, 2 out of 3 falls Match. Also announced is the inclusion of  'The Female Fight Machine Jenny Sjödin as a Special Enforcer in an attempt to keep some order in the match. Two of the hardest-hitting competitors in PW:E history are going to war this Sunday in London.

Guest Article: Ain't No Party Like A BAE Club Party (Billy Strachan)

Women's wrestling in Scotland is at an all time high with talent bursting from all over, so in this spotlight of the Scottish scene I'm going to focus on two of my favourites that I've seen grow into two fantastic wrestlers whether they team up or fight individually.

SAMMII JAYNE

Making her start with Scottish Wrestling Entertainment back in 2012, Sammii started as a shy and quite vanilla in character. Being one of the only females on the SWE roster at the time she would face both men and women, being the scrappy underdog in most bouts. She would evolve, thanks in large part to Source Wrestling School and her association with "The Hashtag Scumbag" Ian Ambrose, into one of the best wrestlers on the SWE roster. Having blistering matches on a regular basis with the likes of Nikki Storm, Viper and Debbie Sharpe. Sammii was one of only two female wrestlers to hold the SWE Future Division Championship, she did so by beating the first, Viper, in a triple threat match also involving Debbie Sharpe.

Her SWE chapter was only the beginning, laying the ground work for bigger things. It was her Fierce Females journey that really got all eyes on Sammii Jayne. An incredible match against Fierce Female's Scottish Champion Kay Lee Ray saw people take notice of Sammii, she may've come up short in a match that took to the streets but she left a lasting impression on the Fierce Females fans that night.

Now you can see Sammii Jayne all over the country, from Discovery Wrestling in the capital, ICW in Glasgow, PBW, SWA, to up North for Rock N Wrestle and WrestleZone. I would even go as far to say that Sammii Jayne is, right now, one of the Top Five women wrestlers in the country in my opinion. Up there with Nikki Storm, Viper and Kay Lee Ray.

I'm like a broken record when I say that I saw Sammii right near the start when she faced Nikki Storm way back in August 2012 but to see someone evolve so much in so little time it's hard not to harp on about it. You wouldn't believe that it was the same person now. It was in stark contrast to the confident demeanour that fans should expect when seeing Sammii in action now. Confident, devious and hungry.

DEBBIE SHARPE

Starting with SWE as a referee, Debbie soon saw herself right in the action with the likes of Viper and Sammii Jayne. In SWE she was the polar opposite of Sammii's more serious, by any means nessacery, no nonsense approach, Debbie was the fun and bubbly side and the SWE fans took to her immediately. Debbie Sharpe vs Sammii Jayne was one of SWE's biggest feuds, tradiing wins back and forth with each match better than the last. It's a rivalry that has seen them face each other all over the country from WrestleZone in Aberdeen to Fierce Females in Glasgow.

Debbie has been unfortunate to suffer from several injuries early on in her career but with bad luck, Debbie saw opportunity and with that the #PrayForDebbie social media campaign was born. Her natural charisma is infectious whether she wants you cheer or boo her, she has the ability to make you react.

Seeing Debbie wrestle it's clear she puts everything into her craft and is entertaining. Whether she's the cowardly baddie, the feisty fan favourite or just Debbie Sharpe, she is one of the finest that Scotland has to offer.

VERSUS

As mentioned, Debbie and Sammii have faced each other numerous times in SWE, SWA, ICW and WrestleZone. Tag team matches, battle royals, triple threats, these two are very familiar foes that know each other very well which has the danger of getting stale but I, personally, have seen them face off many times and they find a way to keep their matches fresh. One that stands out is a triple threat ladder match between the two, plus another name that has been mentioned a lot in this article, Viper. A hard-hitting encounter with high risks that had everyone on the edge of their seats.

TEAM BAE

Debbie Sharpe and Sammii Jayne are the Ying to the others Yang. They are destined to be together whether as a team or fighting on opposite sides of the ring. With a chemistry that works in both scenarios, they have a natural rapore that extends from not only the in ring work but onto promo videos, like this latest one:

Wrestle Ropes' Ready for the Weekend: September 2015 Weekend 1

We're back with another edition of Ready For The Weekend and it's another packed weekend of events. Let's have a little peak at the wrestling goodness that awaits.

On Friday night, Pro Wrestling 4 U return to their familiar haunt of the Silverdale Working Mens Club in Newcastle-Under-Lyme with Sweet As A Nut. In a turn from their normal events, PW4U have allowed the fans the opportunity to vote on certain aspects on some of the matches. One of the options that was chosen was a Best Of 3 Series between Violet Vendetta and Laura Jane. While Laura Jane may be a newcomer to PW4U, Violet Vendetta's actions and personality have made sure that the fans of PW4U won't forget her. Could Laura Jane cause an upset and steal Vendetta's thunder? We'll find out on Friday. A majority of the matches announced have been subject to a vote on social media, however the PW4U G6 Championship defence will be a bit different as the vote will take place live at the Silverdale Working Mens Club. Jurgen Heimlich has been a fighting champion since winning the title and on September 4th he'll be in a fight again but he's in the dark over whether he'll be facing Robert Sharpe, Noah or Zak Northern. In the main event, Keith Myatt shall defend the PW4U Championship against Barricade. Now that is a challenge in itself even for a veteran of the squared circle such as Keith Myatt. Now add in the fans choice of a Tables Match and the challenge increases tenfold. That being said, Keith Myatt became the champion due to his skills and will to win. Barricade faces as much of a challenge to dethrone Myatt as Myatt does to keep the title.

Moving on to Saturday night and Pride Wrestling are back in action with Saviours Of The Universe in Bridgeton, Glasgow. Pride Wrestling are known for blending established names with up-and-coming talent and this event is no different. Two men who are very well known to Pride Wrestling and British fans as a whole are Dickie Divers and Joe Coffey. These men have had their battles in Pride Wrestling before, in fact they competed on the first show in Bridgeton. However 5 years have gone by since that encounter and both men have grown and evolved in that time. Now it's time to see what has changed since 2010 when this rivalry is renewed. Some big names have been a part of Pride Wrestling in the past. One of those is 'The Best In Th Galaxy' Nikki Storm. Well the Storm is returning to Bridgeton on Saturday night but she'll come face to face with an opponent who has run through the majority of the female division in Pride, Layla Rose. Rose says that Nikki Storm is just another Barbie to break. Storm is back to prove why she's not just the best in the galaxy but the saviour of the Pride Wrestling universe. Originally a match between DCT and Chris Renfrew was scheduled for September 5th until an injury forced Renfrew to withdraw. However, the current N7 champion was given the chance by The Gaffer to choose a replacement for himself. And what a replacement he chose former champion, Joe Hendry. DCT has shown the heart and determination he has which has made him such a big figure in Pride. He'll need all of it when he not only faces the 'Global Hero' but a ringside surrounded by Chris Renfrew and The Gaffer's henchmen.

And finally on to Sunday and there was only really one show we could focus on and that was Progress Wrestling's Chapter 21: You Know We Don't Like To Use The Sit Down Gun. The main event shall see the first defence by Will Ospreay of the PROGRESS Championship. Ospreay gave everything to finally end the reign of Jimmy Havoc at Chapter 20 but now a new challenge presents itself in the shape of the 2015 Thunderbastard winner, 'The Star Attraction' Mark Haskins. Ospreay may have gotten out of the proverbial frying pan, he's now in the fire. This is a big test for ' The Aerial Assassin' against one of the best in Europe. Speaking of tests, Tommy End and Michael Dante have shown that they want to be tested as they've issued an open challenge to any team in the world to come and face them this Sunday at the Electric Ballroom. Who shall answer the challenge? We'll find out on Sunday! At Download Festival this year, El Ligero attacked James Davis in the aftermath of their match. Since then Davis has had no chance of retribution. Well that all changes this Sunday as El Ligero and his Origin team-mate, Nathan Cruz face The London Riots in a tag team match. Dealing out pain is always on The Riots minds. This time it has the added flavour of revenge with it.

That wraps up this week's preview of the weekend's wrestling schedule. Of course, there are many more events taking place over the three days. To find out more about the shows we've highlighted here as well as all the others, check us out at www.wrestleropesuk.wordpress.com for the latest show and match announcements, British Wrestling event list and more.

Over The Border - A Revolution Has Begun

2014 has been a huge year for professional wrestling. With Scottish wrestling promotions really coming into their own and at least two companies drawing over 1000 fans in attendance, it's growing at a fast rate. Thanks, in part, to the Insane Fight Club documentary on the BBC. It really helped people realise that there are local wrestling companies that aren't "WWF Tribute" shows but legitimate companies with their own identity.

In every corner of Scotland there is a company that gives you something a little bit different, from Rock N Wrestle and Caithness Pro Wrestling in the Highlands, WrestleZone in Aberdeenshire, SWE in Tayside, Reckless Intent in West Lothian, even Target tread the borders into Dumfries and Galloway. I can't forget the central belt and surrounding area that harbours a bursting scene with ICW, SWA, BCW, PBW, Fierce Females, PWE and Pride respectively. With many companies starting in the last year, like the aforementioned Rock N Wrestle and also Discovery Wrestling, and companies touring Scotland over the year like W3L, you can't help but be swept up in the momentum that Scottish wrestling is building.

Wrestling is a serious business, no more Tribute Kanes and Tribute Mankinds rolling about and failing to fool even the 10 year olds in attendance, but now there are actual wrestlers, entertainers and something you can believe in. It's proven by how many people want to spread the word about Scottish wrestling through blogs, videos, podcasts and Facebook pages (myself included) we are all proud of this revolution happening in our country.

Proof is shown in TNA British Bootcamp Season 2 where four of Scotland’s best made it through to the UK Finals; Noam Dar, Kay Lee Ray, Nikki Storm and Grado. This is just scratching the surface of what Scotland has to offer.

It can only get better, with the country producing the best male and female talent it is only a matter of time before we see Scottish wrestling back on TV (and I don't mean a graveyard slot on MyChannel). Insane Fight Club 2 is set for airing next year on BBC One and with the ICW On Demand service (only £3.95) available plus a whole load of content on YouTube including full events from SWE and PWE, we are in a haven of opportunity to watch the cream of the crop, the best in Europe and it is right on your doorstep.

Drew Galloway sums it up best.

SWE Uprising Presents Seasons Beatings VI Review - Craig Hermit

The show kicked off with a great reception from fans, eager to see more from this organisation that has been growing in there fanbase from the past year's events.

The first match to kick off the show was a Handicap match seeing Johnny Lions vs Euan G Mackie & Jam O’Malley,   those who were excited to see Lions weren't disappointed by the display as he was in control of the match until Mackie blasted him with the ring hammer to the knee and then a following shot to the head from O’Malley with his cane took out Lions again leaving him defenceless, he was forced to submit as O'Malley executed the leglock.

Nikki Storm vs Debbie Sharp was up next. Storm seemed to channelling her inner Trish Stratus in this match, as the fans were clearly on the side side of Sharp. The fans worked hard to fire Sharp up and encourage her to go that extra mile, but it was Storm who was able to get the win after Debbie's high cross body off the top turnbuckle failed to connect, allowing Storm to hit her with the spinning neckbreaker. A credible match.

Braveheart arrived to the scorn of the fans and announced that every winner from tonight will compete in a soul survivor elimination match in the main event. A great addition to an already good card, the fans loved the idea knowing that the heels where 2-0 up already!

The cheers turned to boos again as Braveheart brought out his new security team, The Trident, the fans looked displeased as this new team looked like a copy of the WWE's The Shield. However, this new team under Bravehearts orders attacked Scotty Riccio, but one thing  to take from this angle was one of the members of the Trident performing an amazing 360 shooting star press on Riccio. A good angle, but more needs to be shown to fans that the Trident aren't just a carbon copy.

Chaz Phoenix vs Joe Hendry was next up, and it was clear that Phoenix was here to show dominance over Hendry, despite Hendry's agility in the ring. Phoenix was all business throughout the match to show why he should be a contender for the Heavyweight title, and a point proven when he made Hendry tap to the Texas Cloverleaf.

The SWE Heavyweight Championship match was next,
Champion Damian O’Connor defending against Ian Ambrose, O'Connor was clearly the champion of the fans as well, as they rained cheers on him and scorn on Ambrose. Ambrose pulled all the stops to show why he was a threat to the Champion, the climax of the good match came when O'Connor accidentally hit the referee with his Brogue Kick and gave Ambrose the chance to hit him with the title belt, fans were in uproar as they couldn't bare to see there Champion defeated this way, but after a near fall O'Connor rallied to connect the Brogue Kick on Ambrose to get the pin and retain the SWE Heavyweight Championship.

Then it was Jason Costello vs Claymore. Costello did everything he could in this match to get under the skin of Claymore but the fans recognising this, repaid in kind by doing the same to him, and it showed as Claymore was in control of the match until after a nearfall. Claymore saw red, arguing with the referee, Costello got the pinfall by rollup.

Next was the Future Division Championship, (champion)Viper vs Sammii Jayne, a competitive match, with women proved why this division is one to watch for great wrestling. Viper showed the fans why she is their Champion by making Sammie Jay tap with the Boston Crab to retain the SWE Future Division Championship, and they were delighted to see their Champion win.

Martyn Stallyon vs Jackie Polo was next, Polo let the fans listen to his singing before the match, and they weren't impressed, both showed great skills and storytelling in the ring, Stallyon was able to get the pin on Polo after Polo connected with the exposed turnbuckle pad he tried to force Stallyon into, falling victim to the frog splash and the fans overjoyed he got the win.

Next was the Elimination match, based on the results before hand it would be 3 vs 4 Survivor Series rules,  Damian O’Connor, Viper & Martyn Stallyon vs Jam O’Malley, Nikki Storm, Jason Costello & Chaz Pheonix. Some great matches and feuds were made to tease the fans, as Costello and Stallyon started the battle, as the match continued, Phoenix pinned Stallyon then Viper pinned O'Malley and O'Connor beat Costello, the fans erupted as Viper battled Storm and on this occasion Viper got the pin, then Pheonix entered and showed no mercy to Viper, almost ready to tap to Pheonix in the boston crab, O'Connor hit Phoenix with the Brogue Kick for Viper to get the pin, leaving the Heavyweight and Future Champion the sole survivors.

As expected, Mr News appeared to picked his tag team partner, despite the threats from Braveheart, Mr News picked Steve Magners as his partner to face The Syndicate on January 25th at ‘Uprising’ much to the fans celebration that Magners returned

This was a great event, and the fans clearly enjoyed, and based on this night showing that this is one organisation to watch for the future.
